Regional Information
Lying a little to the south of the
Dordogne is a region of glorious sunflowers, tobacco plantation,
and walnut groves. The river Lot winds its way through rolling
hills, with emerald meadows mingling with forests and limestone
gorges, which are dotted with caves then weaves a blue ribbon
through some of the oldest vineyards in France. It.s a diverse
region, with inland beaches, and pretty bastide medieval towns,
with castles and chateaux perched on cliff tops. The area
is famous for wine, cepes, pickled walnuts, and foie grias,
black truffles and other gastronomic delights.
Rocamadour
A dramatic village clinging to a cliff face and a pilgrimage
centre due to its history surrounding an early Christian hermit
St Amadour and the subsequent spate of miracles.
Sarlat
A beautiful restored town of honey coloured stone buildings
and a famous Saturday market. It possesses the highest concentration
of medieval, Renaissance and 17 the century facades of any
town in France.
Domme
A medieval Bastide town with wonderful views over the Dordogne
River.
St-Cirq-Lapopie
One of the most beautiful villages
in France perched on the cliff tops above the River Lot.
Las Caux and Les Eyzies
Fabulous scenery with a multitude of prehistoric caves.
Perigueux
A gastronomic centre with a superb
Cathedral.
Carjac
A cultural oasis one of Frances most
important centres for contemporary art.
La Roque-Gagea
A most beautiful
village tucked into the cliffs on the banks of the river.
Bergerac
Famous for its gastronomic food and
glorious wine.
Gouffre De Padirac
One of the greatest attractions of this region, which has
a stunning succession of galleries, created from the collapse
of a cave. A lift takes you down to the bottom and you go
along by boat on a subterranean river.
Toulouse
Is Frances fourth largest metropolis,
best seen on foot Toulouse offers excellent regional cuisine,
two striking
cathedrals, lively street life and a superb rose-brick Old
Town and of course many cosmopolitan shops.
St Emilion
The famous vineyard village which has
been described as one of the most beautiful sites in France.
St-Antonin-Noble-Val
A small beautiful medieval town now
famous as the setting for award winning film 'Charlotte Gray'.
Caix
An amazing drive along the hillside
roads over looking the river Lot and then the vineyards of
Caix. It holds several vineyards from which you can try and
buy by the bottle or case.
In addition to sightseeing there are several activities to
which the Lot lends itself. Exploring the splendid grottoes
and underground caves (by boat or by foot), canoeing, water-skiing,
paragliding and swimming in numerous places from the many
riverside beaches not to mention walking and cycling routes.
